What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a query-and-response protocol used to look up registration data for domain names and IP addresses. It returns information such as the registrar, registration and expiry dates, name servers, and sometimes contact details for the domain owner.
What can I find with a WHOIS lookup?
A WHOIS lookup reveals the domain registrar, when the domain was created and when it expires, the authoritative name servers, DNSSEC status, and (when not redacted) registrant contact information. For IP addresses it shows the network owner, allocated range, and organization details.

Enter any domain name (e.g. example.com) in the search box above. Enter a bare domain without www or http — the tool queries the relevant WHOIS registry in real time. For generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org), data comes from ICANN-accredited registrar records. For country-code TLDs (.uk, .de, .jp), data availability varies by registry policy. Some registries restrict output under GDPR.
Common uses for WHOIS lookups
Verify domain ownership before purchasing or contacting a site. Check whether a domain is about to expire. Find the registrar and nameservers when troubleshooting DNS issues. Identify the abuse contact for a domain sending spam or phishing. Confirm a new domain registration completed successfully. WHOIS privacy and GDPR
Before 2018, WHOIS records included registrant name, email, phone, and address. Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal data for EU registrants — you will see "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" where contact details used to appear. Business registrations are less affected; company names and addresses are usually still visible.
